I could not help but respond to another set of individual and collective self destruction comments by the attached author!
Universities and colleges are about learning perspectives, perceptions, supported by evidence and facts; and then seeking common shared values and strategies for solutions!
It is amazing to read why Going to College is such a crime? The generation who claimed "Revolution before Education" has a serious challenge of understanding that Education should always be before change. Remember, the 1960s and 1970s when college students went to the bush that resulted in Individual and collective suicides, because they avoided college and chose to struggle in the bush.
Imagine the world if they stayed and debated in the Universities and came up with creative and lasting solutions!
To date that generation has not understood the meaning and purpose of going to college. The reason of my concern and response about going to Columbia University in 2010. It is long over due!
I. First the Research Pyramid: How can we change the current Global Economic and Ecological Crisis?
Ask the Research Pyramid Questions First: What? Why? How? Who? When? and Where? first.
1. What is the type of change needed today at the center of Global Economic and Ecological Crisis?
2. Why do we need the change?
3. How do we bring about change that is useful and keeps the interests of 7 Billion people around the world?
4. Who are the stakeholders for the economic and ecological crisis? the proponents and saboteurs of change?
5. Where should we start in the tropics or the poles?
6. When should we begin to act? Now or Never?
II. Second: Then the CORT Analysis: Challenges, Opportunities, Risks and Threats?
Identify the challenges, opportunities, risks and threats of Global Economic Crisis (Corporate Welfare) and Ecological Crisis (Corporate Greed) and the lack of Good Governance based on facts, science and Needs Assessment.
III. Third: The Option and Alternative Appraisals :
What are the Options and Alternatives at local, regional and global level.
In effect looking at ABC and 123
Option: A, B C
Alternatives : 1. 2 3.
IV. Decision Science: Options and their strategic implementation: Immediate, Short and Long Term impact
A. Best Option: Option that deals with both ecological and economic Crisis: Clean Energy, Green technologies
B. Win-Win Option: Transition technologies and economies like Hybrid technologies and
nano technologies
C. Compromise Option: Time sensitive changes that accommodates resource, talent and technological developments over time.
V. Actionable Strategies/ SMART Action: Specific, Measurable, Appropriate, Realistic and Time Sensitive.
1. Do Nothing. Continue to observe and try few Pilot Projects for qualitative and quantitative research
2. Do Something: Talk, Research and suggest ideas and few feasibility studies
3. Do Everything: Time is short, start addressing all issues with specific SMART Objectives
The above five series are strategies to address the current Global Economic and Ecologic Crises rather urgently.
We are all in this boat called the Aging Planet and its challenges of Population Explosion.
We can continue to blame the Universe, the Galaxies, the Stars, the Planets, the Moon and then the weather? and do nothing.
Alternatively we can blame all 9 Billion people who have died and the living 7 Billion and sacrifice some of the leaders to some of our un substantiated rage, and celebrate at our upcoming Witch Parties and Thanks Giving and then ask for forgiveness during Yom Kipppur, Kwanza and Christmas and start all over again with our mad New Year parties to look for another excuse for our in action.
We need to act fast and act soon at individual and collective level
Time to work and to seek for lasting solutions, instead of closing education centers in Africa and then wanting to close down education exercises in Columbia, New York.
Let us do the right thing and go back to school! In the end it is all perspectives and perceptions! I look forward to learn from your perspectives and perceptions!

Why we must engage on our Forum
Columbia's responsibility to promote dialogue is achieved its decision to host Prime Minister of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi at the World Leader's Forum.
By Tim Lam, Sara Jacobs, Samuel Roth, Mishaal Khan, Iman Nanji, Emily Tamkin, Chris Chan, Alisa Lu, and Alex Frouman
Published September 20, 2010
Over the past week, Ethiopian, East African, and human rights organizations all over the world have published a flurry of open letters, condemning Columbia’s decision to host Prime Minister of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi at this week’s World Leaders Forum. The letters reopen the old, rankling, and unsettled debates raised by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s 2007 visit, questions about whether it is in line with the University’s mission and stature to invite controversial—some would say dictatorial—world leaders to speak to students and faculty members on campus. As these questions reemerge, the Columbia Political Union wishes to express its position that the invitation of Zenawi, and all events fostering political dialogue and awareness, are both in tune with our own mission and that of the University as a whole.
Yet, such events may only be beneficial to students and the world when the University serves as a neutral and critical moderator. In this light, the previous inclusion of an unedited quote from the Ethiopian government’s mission on the WLF’s online event description must be described as an unfortunate and sullying gaff. The unqualified statement implied University support for Zenawi and his government. The retraction of the quote and the reaffirmation in a statement by Columbia’s Director of Media Relations, Robert Hornsby, that the University remains a neutral party and that Zenawi’s speech will be followed by an open question-and-answer period, have done much to assure that the event will, in line with the goal of WLF, “advance lively, uninhibited dialogue.” Still, the mishap has raised reasonable doubts.
CPU maintains that this event can prove beneficial, especially in exploring the criticisms of Zenawi used to urge Columbia to reconsider its invitation. Detractors accuse Americans of viewing Zenawi, an American ally in Africa, without scrutiny—and this is fair. His is not a name to make the major news cycles, not a name to enter daily conversation like Ahmadinejad’s. Profiles of the man in the West are a mixed bag—questioning his two-decade tenure and his treatment of opposition parties and the press, but applauding his push for stability, economic growth, and self-sovereignty. Most Americans could not tell their East African counterparts whether they consider the man a dictator, or a democrat in the throes of difficult national transitions.
Giving such a man a podium does not mean endorsing his ideas, as has been argued. It does, however, mean drawing attention to the man. And as long as we are true to our spirit—and Hornsby holds his word that a free and robust questioning of Zenawi occurs, possibly forcing him to confront with candor the questions he may be able to avoid in his own nation—that attention will hopefully lead to reflection and investigation in the news cycle, and among individuals at Columbia and beyond, which will benefit the world.
True, if Zenawi is a dictator, he may spin the event any way he likes at home, casting this as an endorsement. But spin is spin, and a dictator seeking self-legitimation will find it somewhere. Weighing the benefit of awareness, dialogue, pressure from our corner, and the manipulation of that dialogue by outside sources is a complex calculation. But to shy from controversy, to avoid engaging with a tricky situation, to cease even trying to support uninhibited and fruitful dialogue in the world, would be misguided and out of line with our mission as a group, and Columbia’s as an institution. As long as the exchange is truly free, spirited, and critical, it is wise to err on the side of engagement.

· I really do not care who is who and where they came from and how many people are supporting the current government of Ethiopia.
The underline point should to be whether Melese committed the political motivated crimes or not. Regardless of the number of people who stand behind him and the amount of money he is spending to overshadow the truth; there are so many human and other materials that proof his crimes. The common practice of hiding the truth and dividing the people to buy time to stay in power has profited the government nothing he should learn from his past. It is not good to repeat the same mistakes like what his predecessor deed unless he is doomed to repeat it.
I hope the bloggers did not come to this universe yesterday .... Did you say DIALOG? The prim minister iron boxed all the possible ways for peaceful coexistence by arresting all political personals including still unlawfully jailed Judge Birtukan, forcing them to leave their country like elected mayor of Addis Ababa Brihanu(Dr.) and many others, killing many politicians and commuting crime against the public. Unless you guys cornered your self to support the prime minster, what did mean having dialog after twenty years of dictatorship? Are you trying to insult us? I hope you are not calling us barbarian. We Ethiopian know and prefer dialog even at the critical times. If we did not love to live in harmony we could have bucherd each other as the Melese stir between tribes in the country. Any way I never had a chase to see any kind of dialog from the day one I known the current mafia group in power if you ‘bloggers’ experienced some let me know.

· Dear CPUs,
Ok, you have invited a corrupt, saddest and narcissist criminal/dictator to your campus, and you do not how to get out of situation without loosing your face. Just invite Dr. Berhanu to the event, one of the victims of Melse zenawi's cruel hand, and give him a 5 minutes of the time after the dictator has finshed speaking to react on his speech. First that will give voice to the multitude of voiceless victims of Melese Zenawi, second he will be able to shade lights on multitude of lies that the pathological lire is ready to tell you without blinking eyes. Melese and his cronies have taken the art lieing to a different layer, may be you might want to invite Dr. Phil to the event so that he could make an episode for one of his shows :-).

· Melese Zenawi controls every aspect of life in Ethiopia and he has all the platform he requires to disseminate the lies about the democracy he has built, the economic growth Ethiopia achieved under his auspices and so forth. If there is anyone who needs the outlet/platform to speak, it is the Ethiopian people how are held hostage by Meles and closest relatives. when you are listing to Melese zenawi Lecture in the comfort of your chair at Columbia, Butrukan Mediksa, , the champion of the oppressed people and the first female leader of the largest opposition group in Ethiopia languishing in dungeon of Melse Zenawi Kalti, just because Melese's jealous mind couldn't handle her popularity. He so saddest that he kept her in solitary confinement in dark cell for 7 months.

Mr. Zenawi Goes to College!
September 21st, 2010 |
Alemayehu G. Mariam
Zenawi's Charm Offensive in America?
Fresh on the heels of shutting down all private distance education, Including distance higher education, and "winning" the Parliamentary election in May by 99.6 percent, dictator-in-chief Meles Zenawi is scheduled to speak at Columbia University on September 22 and His Trumpet accomplishments as the guardian of Democracy and Prosperity in Ethiopia and provider of enlightened leadership to the African continent. The puffed-up announcement for His appearance at Columbia's World Leaders Forum, Which subsequently WAS Withdrawn by an embarrassed administration University, Stated:
... Meles Zenawi of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia will presents The keynote address on the topic of Ethiopia and African Leadership. His address will launch the World's GCC and Africa series .... Zenawi has served as chairman of the Organisation of the African Union (1995-1996), as co-chairman of the Global Coalition for Africa, and WAS appointed as Chair of the African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) ... Zenawi Was the co-chairperson of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2006, Which Led to the adoption of the Beijing Action Plan for Economic Progress in partnerships. Under the leadership of seasoned Governmental ... ... Ethiopia Zenawi Continues to make and has made progresses (sic) in Areas Including many in education, transportation, healthand energy.
The event is designed to facilitate "conversations to Examine Africa's place in the world". The "Key Subjects" of the conversation reportedly "includes the future of African agriculture, the explosion of Asian investment on the continent, The Evolving Contours of Global Aid to Africa, and the impact of the financial crisis on the region."
Allowing Zenawi to Speak at Columbia is "An Affront to His Victims" of Human Rights Abuses
Nowhere is the case for disallowing Zenawi the right to speak at Columbia University made more convincingly and compellingly Than in the letter of Two Ethiopian Extraordinarily Courageous husband and wife team of journalists, Eskinder Serkalem Fasil and Nega, touniversity president Lee Bollinger. They wrote [1]:
We are banned Ethiopian journalists who Were charged with treason by the government of PM Meles Zenawi Subsequent to disputed election results in 2005, incarcerated under deplorable Circumstances, only to be acquitted Sixteen months later, after prematurely Serkalem Fasil Gave birth in prison.
Severely underweight at birth Because Serkalem's Physical and Psychological privation in one of Africa's worst prisons, an incubator WAS deemed life-saving to the new-born child by prison doctors; Which WAS, in an act of incomprehensible vindictiveness, denied by the authorities. (The child miraculously Nevertheless Survived. Thanks to God.)
... While we acknowledge [Zenawi's] right to express His views, it is an affront to His government's Numerous Victims of Repression HIM to grant the privilege to do so notable on the Premises of Columbia ...
Serkalem and Eskinder are absolutely right Outraged In Their expressions of Disapproval of Zenawi's speech at Columbia. These are two Ethiopian journalists for Whom I Have The Highest Respect and Admiration. They are selfless patriots who Could Be Best Described in Churchillian terms: "Never in the field of journalism WAS so much owed by so Many to So Few."
I Have Been approached by Various groups and individuals to urge the leadership of Columbia to dis-invite or Zenawi Have The universityWithdraw the offer of delivering the keynote address. " The Reasons are many. Some say mere invitation to speak at the world-class institution gives Zenawi A Certain patina of legitimacy, Which Could he use camouflage to hoodwink Americans and His criminal history.Others say he will try to use the event as a soapbox to spread lies about his "accomplishments", complete with Wholly fabricated statistics about "double digit growth" [2] and fairy tales of a 99.6 percent election victory, and use the Forum as a bully pulpit to rag Against His Critics. There Are Those Who Suggest That Stiglitz staged the keynote address "to give his" buddy Zenawi "an opportunity to clean up and build up His image Some intellectual" creds, "Zenawi Which Could take back to Ethiopia for bragging rights. The Those Who Respect the views of Columbia to urge disinvite Zenawi.
But as a university professor and Constitutional lawyer steadfastly dedicated to free speech, I Have Adopted One Yardstick for All issues Concerning Free Speech, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and Impart Any information and ideas through media and regardless of frontiers. "I underscore the words" everyone "and" regardless of frontiers. "
Alternatively Stated, though I Condemn His Zenawi for abuse, mistreatment and cruelty and Eskinder Against Serkalem and other journalists, disagree with HIM on His Repeated theft of Elections, trashing of the Ethiopian Human Rights of Citizens, boldfaced lies about Economic Growth [2] manipulation of the Judiciary for political purposes, unjust incarceration of Birtukan Midekssa, the first woman political party leader in Ethiopian history and other tens of Thousands of political prisoners, crackdown on the press and Civil Society Organizations, subversion of the legislative process to mill out repressive Laws and His Completely bogus theory of "ethnic federalism" (an artifice of His divide-and-rule strategy) and so on, I Shall Defend vigorously His right to speak at Columbia Not Just Any Other But at public venues in the United States of America.
Right to Protest
Let me make it clear That I am not here Arguing That Those who wish to protest Zenawi's speech at Columbia SHOULD NOT do so. They Should, and I vigorously Defend Their Constitutional right to protest and express fully Their views about His actions and policies. My only plea to Them Is That We Should Strive to make this opportunity a teachable moment for Zenawi. In my view, it Would be a crying shame for His Zenawi to hop on plane and go back to Ethiopia to Himself mumbling something about the "extreme Diaspora" and so on Because he is heckled, Somehow disrupted or impeded from speaking. I say if we can tolerate racist and hate speech on university campuses, Also we can tolerate the petty tyrant of a rant for an hour or two.
A teachable Moment for a Tyrant
My Reasons for Defending Zenawi's right to speak are principled, straightforward and myriad:
Most at the elementary level, the American university is a traditional forum for the free exchange of ideas, Whether silly or sublime. Every year, tens of Thousands of speeches on American university campuses are Given. Even the Representatives of the Neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and motley crews of racists and fascists are allowed to speak on American university campuses. By The Same Token, Zenawi Should Be Able to speak at Columbia.
I Realize That May Not Be in this popular view to hold, But I am reminded of the painful truth in Professor Noam Chomsky's admonition: "If we do not believe in freedom of expression for people we Despise, we do not believe in it at all. "On a personal level, it Would be hypocritical of me to Argue for free speech and press freedoms in Ethiopia and justify censorship or muzzling of Zenawi stateside. If censorship is bad for the good Citizens of Ethiopia, It Is Also Bad for the dictators of Ethiopia.
But There Is Another Set of Reasons Why I want to speak at Columbia Zenawi. I want the event to be a teachable moment for HIM.Perhaps this opportunity will AFFORD HIM A Glimpse of The Clash of Ideas that routinely take place in American universities. May he begin to appreciate the simple truth That Rejected ideas and arguments are accepted and won and lost in the Cauldron of critical analysis oxygenated by the bellows of free speech, not in prison dungeons WHERE journalists and dissidents are bludgeoned and left to rot. Zenawi By denying the right to speak at Columbia, Also we risk becoming prisoners of ignorance. That is why free speech is at the core of Nelson Mandela's teaching: "A Man Who Takes Away Another Man's freedom is a prisoner of hatred, he is locked behind the bars of Prejudice and narrow-mindedness." Free speech is the Key by Which one escapes from the steel bars and stonewalls of "Prejudice and narrow-mindedness." I sincerely hope Zenawi will find That key at Columbia and finally escape from His bleak and desolate planet of "Prejudice and narrow-mindedness."
On Another Level, to disallow Zenawi from speaking is an implicit admission That We fear ideas. Zenawi has muzzled and intimidated Nearly all of His critics and shuttered newspapers in Ethiopia, jammed the Voice of America and the independent Ethiopian Satellite Television Service and enacted repressive press and Civil Society Laws Because he is afraid of ideas - ideas about freedom, democracy, human rights, accountability, transparency, the rule of law and so on. But the old adage Still Holds True: "There Is Nothing More Powerful Than an idea Whose Time Has Come." In America, we cherish and embrace good ideas (Not Fear Them) Them and put into practice, we discard the bad ones in the trash.
But I have a reason That overrides all others. I believe in the power of truth. We Can Defend Neither the truth nor championed it by muzzling the liar. Let Zenawi speak! Let Him Have His "conversation"!
A Few Topics for "Conversation"
Since Professor Stiglitz is interested in Having a "conversation" here are A Few topics Should he ask Zenawi to talk about. How Is It That Ethiopia, under his "seasoned leadership, managed to rank:
138/159 (most corrupt) Countries on the Corruption Index for 2010.
Among the 17 Most failed states (Somalia is No. 1) on the Failed States Index for 2010.
136/179 Countries (most repressive) on the 2010 Index of Economic Freedom.
107/183 Economies for ease of doing business (investment climate) by The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in 2010.
37/53 (poorest governance quality) African Countries in the 2010 Ibrahim Index of African Governance.
101/128 Countries in 2010 on the Political and Economic Bertelsmann Transformation Index, and
141/153 (Environmental poorest public health and ecosystem vitality) Countries in the 2010 Environmental Performance Index.
Fables, Fairy Tales and Q & As
I can imagine Zenawi's angst at the podium Preparing to Tell His fables and fairy tales about Ethiopia's double-digit growth, democracy and leadership in Africa, Globalization and Its Impact on Africa or whatever topic he Chooses at the last minute to muddled His audience. It's all good, fairy tales are entertaining. However, I Suspect That The Story-telling sessions will not be the usual cakewalk. At Columbia, unlike His rubberstamp parliament, Meles Zenawi Will Not Be Able to scowl at, browbeat, belittle or mock anyone, and the unless Stiglitz and company rig the Q & A session to give Zenawi only softball questions, he is going to get some heavy duty drubbing from students and faculty. I would wager to say That His speech will not be the usual soporific monologue, it will be a real "conversation" where he will be asked questions That will make HIM cringe and wince.
I can imagine the audience Asking These Questions:
Mr. Zenawi, what is the special magical spell you used to win the May 2010 election by 99.6 percent?
Answer: "Say 'abracadabra' ten times while holding a rabbit's foot in the left hand at the crack of dawn."
When will you stop trashing the Ethiopian Human Rights of Citizens?

Re: Perspectives and Perceptions at Columbia University!
It is not about Zenawi or Obamabut the Global Ecologic and Economic Crisis! Stupid! I could not help but respond to another set of individual and collective self destruction comments by the attached author!
Universities and colleges are about learning perspectives, perceptions and then seeking common shared values and strategies for solutions!
Remember: It is not about Zenawi or Obama, it is about the Global Economic and Ecologic Crisis- stupid! and what we can do at individual and collective level- always!

Mr. Zenawi Goes to College!

Live from the Zenawi speech

By Thomas Rhiel And Ben Cotton
We’re coming at you live from the highly-contested, protested, and counter-protested Zenawi speech in Roone Arledge. Keep checking back for updates.
5:06: Zenawi says he welcomes engagement, and he’s glad to see students caring enough to learn about Ethiopia. He says that Ethiopia is making progress, which everyone is invited to come see for themselves. And that’s a wrap!
5:03: No more questions. Zenawi will offer some closing remarks.
4:58: Q: What are your thoughts on term limits? A: Ethiopia has a parliamentary system, Zenawi’s saying. A parliamentary system is just as democratic as a presidential system. “In case you are wondering whether I will remain in power until kingdom come, i can assure you that this will be my last term in power.”
4:55: A questioner is railing against Zenawi, listing alleged crimes against humanity committed by Zenawi’s government. The questioner is asking how such crimes could have been committed within a democracy. Zenawi’s response: “I can understand how people have had an inadequate chance to consider the facts.”
4:53: Q: People call you a dictator. Do you have regrets about your tenure? A: No, he says. He believes he removed a brutal dictatorship and rebuilt Ethiopia. He’s very proud.
4:51: Q: What are you doing to improve relations with neighboring countries? A: He says Ethiopia has excellent relations with Sudan, Kenya, and the Somalian government. Just not with Al-Shabaab, an Islamist insurgency group.
4:45: Diouf just told two women in line to ask questions to go to the front of the line. All the people at the front of the line had been men. Explained Diouf: “Privilege of the moderator.”
4:39: Q: How is his regime different from the previous one? A: Under the last regime, people were killed without having access to courts. “That type of oppression is dead. Its finished. Its not coming back.”
4:37:: Question: Should we take you at your word when free press is restricted? (Applause.) Answer: He believes he’s done his fair share to fight oppressive systems.
4:36: Question: What do you think of the “gross national happiness” concept? Answer: Sounds interesting. He hasn’t really studied it.
4:34: Next question to Zenawi: What are your views on Iran? Answer: An arms race in the Middle East would be catastrophic. He’d support a dialogue to resolve the problem.
4:33: His answer: It’s 99.6% of all seats, not 99.6% of all votes. Ethiopia has a first-past-the-post system, which means you need just a little over 50% of the vote for each seat. His party is popular because he’s presided over seven years of growth, he says.
4:31: Mamadou Diouf, the head of Columbia’s Institute of African Affairs, is now coming on to conduct a Q&A session. First question: How is his party able to get 99.6% of vote in an election?
4:30: And…he’s done! He spoke for less than 20 minutes.
4:27:Africans have the choice now to generate growth themselves, Zenawi says. Africa is an “essential piece of the response” to the global economic crisis—the continent must keep producing and consuming goods to keep the engines of globalization running.
4:24: The room isn’t full. Maybe 20 open seats in the back.
4:22: People seem to have given up on Africa’s contribution to the global economy, he’s saying.
4:21: Here’s Zenawi speaking. Apologies for the mediocre quality.

4:16: Zenawi has begun speaking. The past several decades, he’s saying, have been bad ones for Africa.
4:11: Steele is now introducing professor Joseph Stiglitz, who will thenintroduce Zenawi.
4:09: Zenawi’s onstage. Provost Claude Steele is introducing him, describing the purpose of universities and the role of uninhibited dialogue. He’s emphasizing that Columbia doesn’t endorse the leaders it invites to the World Leaders Forum.

· Sara Jacobs and et al.,
Thank you for elaborating the need for freedom of speech and academic freedom in the university environment. However, I'm afraid you have missed the bigger picture of what's being protested by the Oromo, Ethiopian, Ogadeni and other Ethiopian communities in the Diaspora.
Please make no mistake that the World Leaders Forum (WLF) is being used as a forum by the packagers of Meles Zenawi, a man who is on the watch list of the Genocide Watch (read: http://www.genocidewatch.org/ethiopia.html). The invitation of Meles Zenawi to WLF is not the entire story, and it is not the whole story.
In 2000 a Harvard University forum invited Meles Zenawi - in the month of September - to make a speech. At that time, Abiyu Geleta, who was the spokesperson of the Oromo Liberation Front, one of the rebels fighting the regime of Meles Zenawi, blasted Harvard University for inviting a human rights violator. Abiyu Geleta is a Harvard-educated lawyer (the same department that produced Barack Obama) and he was appalled with the idea of Harvard being used to promote a human rights violator. Read: http://www.oromia.org/News/AG_Letter_to_Harvard_University.htm
And in 2005, the same month of September, a name prize was created by Yara International, called the Yara Prize, to be given to Meles Zenawi as a pioneer of the green revolution in Africa while he's still a human rights violator. Neither Africa nor Ethiopia have been food secured when he was given such an award; on the contrary, food security in Ethiopia has decreased in Ethiopia under the Meles Zenawi regime of the last 20 years. And, you may ask, what's Yara Prize up to now? Well, the first prize was awarded to Meles Zenawi, then Yara Prize just disappeared --- it's just a moment of celebration now. Read: http://www.yara.com/sustainability/africa_program/the_yara_prize/prizewinners/index.aspx
And now in 2010, in the month of September, Meles Zenawi is being staged at the World Leaders Forum to speak about the Global Economy or Environment (even this is not clear from the WLF website itself, because the point here is not his speech, but his re-packaging as a "world leader"; otherwise, they would have made sure the subject of his speech is clear from the get-go).
You may ask, what's common among the 2000 event, the 2005 and the 2010? Well, I'm pretty sure Columbia Spectator has investigative journalists who can do the job better than I do. A distinguished professor at CU (Jagdish Bhagwati) has not leveled the criticism at PrezBo or WLF, but other actors within CU: http://www.ethiopianreview.com/content/29391 - and he was right on the money.
WLF is being used to re-package a human rights violator and an election thief, Meles Zenawi, every five years in the month of September. Do you know that in 2000 he was accused of stealing the election held in May 200? Do you know that in 2005 he killed more than 200 protesters in Addis Ababa and Oromia to steal the election held in May 2005? Do you know that he just claimed to have won 99.6% of the House of Representatives seats and stole the election held in May 2010?
WLF is not an isolated event. It's one in a series of engagements held to re-package Meles Zenawi to the peoples in Ethiopia. Believe me, you are not the audience of this engagement nor its target. The audience and the target is the oppressed peoples in Ethiopia in whose defense no one speaks.
I leave you with the wise advice of a wise president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, of the U.S.A. In his farewell speech to the nation, he warned about the military-industrial complex. He worried that, although the industry helped the military revamp for WWII's victory, their alliance should be put in check. Similarly, although noble causes, such as the environment, the global financial crisis, the Millennium Development Goals, poverty, HIV/AIDS, malaria, are worth fighting for, citizens all over the world should question and be vigilant about funds collected in the fight against these human calamities do not get used to silence political dissents, to wage crimes against humanity, to deny freedom to the voiceless, and to suppress peoples around the world, including Ethiopia.

zenawi is one of the world corrupts dictator .
The massive arrests of Oromos, which the EPRDF called ‘the crackdown’, was conducted from early in the morning to the evening of October 30, 2008. The arrests were without court warrants. Hundreds of heavily-armed federal police and anti-terrorist task force personnel were deployed for the mission in every corner of Addis Ababa city. It was a terror day for Addis Ababa city dwellers – a terror carried out by the government forces. The EPRDF terrorist group terrorized and arrested the following Oromo nationals. My heart goes out for those families/people who lost their family members, who are voiceless, always live on terror and horror as the result of Dictator Meles Zenawi,.
I was very much disappointed with notion and virtue of inviting ruthless ruler, who ruled country at gun point with his thugs to be invited by university. Where is humanity? Where is morality? I guess, morality and humanity is grinded by personal greed, we are in state if low morality through out the world. Columbia University so called professors are not immune from such that low morality. In their mind, the greed is at it’s highest peak.
What is the point to make, what is the point to teach student, to present with the very enemy of” freedom of speech”, praised, given free ride to speak at university. In My opinion, such prestigious University supposed to be the engine and vanguard of humanity, justice, fairness and that advocate for well being of fellow humans across globe.
I kind of sense that, these whole thing is not driven by “freedom of speech” I think also driven by personal greed who has relation with this dictator regime. Besides low morality in this century, this world is very much troubled by personal greed; it took great toll on humans. The current economic melt down is live witness to that.
One thing I am sure is that, when ever I sent my kids, happen to be @ Columbia university, I will make sure not to listen to hypocrisy of ”freedom of speech” lectured by so called professors that invited this child killer. The hands of Meles is tinted /painted with thousands of innocent children blood. Those below the grave ,if they have one( because their dead body is fed to wild beast like they did to 14yrs old girl at Gara suufii, east Oromia), let their soul cry out for low morality of So called Columbia university Professors from the grave, Shame on low morality and greed of Columbia University Professors.

It seems that from the very beginning, EPRDF’s leadership stood on shaky moral
ground. How then could the very same group – who had so egregiously violated all
democratic principles to attain power – be expected to setup a genuine democracy in
Ethiopia?
Indeed, the abuse of power and democracy by the Weyane leadership reached new heights following the creation of EFFORT ,their looted wealth .In the bigninning Weyane leaders projected themselves as heroes, freedom fighters, and champions of the freedom cause. However, no one was permitted to speak openly against their undemocratic rules, abuse of power, discrimination, torture.
In other words, the right to free speech was no longer permissible.
The EPRDF also hit a new low with regards to its handling of political opponents, from
character assassination to political victimization. According to different sources, Human rights watch, African Union,European Union, even the well respected news sources have revealed and documented the facts, the undemocratic actions were evident .Furthermore, the Government rigorously manipulated the facts to create an erroneous image of nationalist leaders (who had opposed ). A slew of propaganda was unleashed against leaders that had opposed the EPRDF . Birtukan Mideksa, and most ethiopians asking for freedom, rule of law was among the victims of this policy and was repeatedly harassed and arrested by the Government. For
instance, in order to prevent her from playing any role in the 2010 May elections, the
Weyane’s Government arrested Birtukan Mideksa and kept under detention for an indefinite period.
I wish you all be conscios to face facts, stand for facts, truth !!!!
1. He changes the country’s image both inside and outside. In Ethiopia, the mindset of the people develops and adopts a life where one can achieve or secure through working hard and acquiring skills so that a person can dream of a good life in the path of change. For me, it such an incredible change where by during the previous regimes that no one had a dream of living a better life or for that matter creating wealth. I would be so lame if I would compare Meles’s administration with that of the previous one. In all standards and measures, one is a better position to compare Meles’s achievement and the country’s developmental growth in every sector.

a Fashist, Racist and a killer Mafiosi in one person. Your invitation has nothing to do neither with Freedom of Expession nor with Academic Freedom.
Mr. J.Sachs, Mr. L.C. Bollinger, and Mr. J. Stiglitz, in all three of you, I see one common thing:- German origin (NAZI PAST???)
Dear Sirs, I see no other reason why you associate yorself with this genocidier. I wish you all three that your children and/or grand children to live under him.
MELES ZENAWI IS A CHAILD KILLER HOW COME YOU INVITING KILLER TO GIVE SPEAK IN COLUMBIA UNIVERSTY IS THAT HOW COLUMBIA UNIVERSTY EDUCATE YOUNG GENERATION TO SERVE AMERICA ?
HOWEVER calling this brutish dictator a “seasoned” one is something they will regret doing very dearly in the future years to come. How cansuch a renowned university make such a collosal mistake?? I still am not sure. What I am fairly certain about is that someone in that university either made a huge mistake or there’s someone important in Colombia that has been infiltrated. Either way, this has brought considerable amount of shame to that University and fair publicity to the Ethiopian cause.

”A questioner is railing against Zenawi, listing alleged crimes against humanity committed by Zenawi’s government. The questioner is asking how such crimes could have been committed within a democracy. Zenawi’s response: “I can understand how people have had an inadequate chance to consider the facts.”

Down Melse and his narrow minded ethnic politics supports.
He has said previously that he will hand power after this term, to me this is just a method that makes people less worried about his dictatorial ship, so he can do more damage in addation to what is doing.
Thank
